Holo Hearts

It was my 5 year anniversary with the boy about a fortnight ago, and I wanted to do something fairly simple and neutral because we were going to the ballet. I'd received my very first linear holo polish in the mail a few days earlier (yeah, my first real holo, I dunno why it took me so long to acquire one), and since it had been really sunny I decided that it was the perfect time to try it. WRONG. The day after I put it on the weather was overcast and raining, and I kept the polish on for 5 WHOLE DAYS even though it was severely chipped because I was desperate to see my first holo in the sun. Sadly it never happened, although the day after I took it off the weather cleared up. Go figure. Anyway, this was my anniversary mani:

The holo I used was Butter London 'Fishwife' (3 coats with no top coat) and I paired it with OPI 'Don't Pretzel My Buttons'. I created the heart by cutting the shape out of a piece of tape and using it as a stencil (you can see The Crafty Ninja's tutorial here). All my photos were taken in the lightbox so sadly the holo isn't very strong, but from a couple of glimpses that I caught under the right lights I bet this one packs a punch in the sun. This definitely won't be my last holo!

  1. Even though you didn't get to wear this in the sun, it's a lovely mani!

    1. Hey Bianca, my lighting set-up is actually really terrible! The light box I have is similar to this one: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/30-40-50-80cm-Photo-Photography-Studio-Shooting-Tent-Light-Cube-box-SoftBox-cm-/171025428343?pt=AU_Sun_Shades&var&hash=item27d1e8ef77&_uhb=1

The light box actually lives at my boyfriend's house because I don't actually have lamps for it, we just set it up below a big fluorescent light he has on his low ceiling. I then use his Sony NEX-5N with a diffuser over the flash. It's really a fluke that it works at all really! Sorry that probably wasn't really much help for you, I think it's just a combination of the camera and a bit of luck with the lighting :/ I prefer to just rely on my Nikon point-and-shoot camera and the sun when I can :)

  3. Pity about the lack of sun. Happy anniversary, though.

Re: Lightbox - I have one like the one you linked Bianca to and it's been totally useless so far. I still use my cardbox box. I can't put any product in it, because it won't sit flat enough on any surface. Have you had that trouble too, or do you not photograph products (sitting flat) in it, just nails?

    1. I mostly just do nail photos in the box. When I do bottle shots I hold the bottle. I find it's ok if I just have one bottle sitting in there though. If I try to line a few up it just doesn't work >.<
